Key Export Drivers :

• There are ten private SEZs in Mumbai Zone under the aegis of the Development Commissioner SEEPZ-SEZ, Andheri, the largest of which is the JNPT SEZ at Uran. Spread over 700 acres, the JNPT SEZ is a multi-sector SEZ and FTWZ. Presently, there are nine units, the biggest of them is DP World having its headquarters in Dubai. The other SEZs are from the Information Technology (IT)/ and Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS) sectors with prominent companies such as Tata, Accenture, L&T, Capegemini, Brookfield, etc. at the helm.
• In sync with the Union government’s guidelines, it was ensured that the private SEZs do not face any inconvenience during the pandemic and lockdown months. Apart from permitting the Work From Home (WFH) concept, the entire functioning and coordination was switched over to digital modes such as virtual meetings, emails, e-office, etc. In fact, certain permissions were also given over WhatsApp to expedite the approvals process, thereby going paperless and retaining the spirit of Ease of Doing Business.
• There is a much stronger thrust on exports as a driver of the Indian economy. Given this scenario, the private SEZs that fall under the purview of the Development Commissioner SEEPZ-SEZ, have gained prominence. Since they are considered to be the key facilitators of exports, the significance of their role has been increasing. The concept is being given far greater impetus as well.
• The post-pandemic period has been quite crucial due to the challenges and adversities faced. Exports have grown in spite of the tough situation prevailing throughout. In fact, it is noteworthy that the figures have actually surpassed the existing benchmarks as well as the target that had been set for the duration.
• This impactful performance, especially during a global crisis, reflects upon the energy and efforts made by the team managing the situation all through at SEEPZ-SEZ. As a result of their proactive approach and well-planned, systematic and seamless functioning, they were able to overcome the challenges encountered no matter how big in quantum or complex in nature.
• I take this opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the support provided by all the manufacturing units at the private SEZs under SEEPZ-SEZ in ensuring that the roadblocks created in the path of regular operations were removed to bring business back on track within a limited timeframe.
